Did you know that the noble gases are named that way because they are all very stable and do not easily react with other elements? These gases include helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. Another interesting fact about the periodic table is that it is arranged by atomic number, which is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus. This means that elements with similar chemical properties are grouped together in columns, known as groups or families. The periodic table is also divided into blocks based on the subshell in which the last electron is present. These blocks are s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block. The s-block and p-block elements are called representative elements, while the d-block and f-block elements are known as transition elements and inner transition elements, respectively. Element 118, oganesson, is the heaviest element on the periodic table and was first synthesized in 2002. It is a member of the noble gas group and is highly unstable, existing for only a fraction of a second before decaying. Lastly, the periodic table is constantly evolving, with new elements being discovered and added over time. As of now, there are 118 confirmed elements, with the most recent additions being nihonium, moscovium, tennessine, and oganesson.
