In the universe, stars are born from clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. The process of star formation begins when a nebula is disturbed, perhaps by a nearby supernova or a passing shockwave, causing it to collapse under its own gravity. As the cloud collapses, it begins to spin and flatten into a spinning disk known as a protostellar disk. In the center of this disk, a dense clump of material begins to form, eventually becoming a protostar. As the protostar continues to accrete material from the disk, it grows in size and temperature until nuclear fusion ignites in its core. This marks the birth of a new star. The process of star formation can take millions of years to complete, with the newly formed star shining brightly as it continues to burn through its nuclear fuel. Over time, some stars will eventually exhaust their fuel and end their lives in spectacular explosions known as supernovae. Studying the formation of stars helps us understand the life cycle of these celestial objects and provides insights into the evolution of galaxies as a whole. By observing young stars and their surrounding protoplanetary disks, astronomers can also gain valuable information about the formation of planets and solar systems.
