In the 1950s in America, Bill Wilson, who had been sober for 20 years and was a co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, had helped, and continued to help, many people recover from alcohol addiction, and addiction in general. Over the years, since he participated in establishing his organization and designing the 12-step program for addiction recovery, he was preoccupied with reflecting on the most crucial principle of the program. He believed that overcoming addiction required a spiritual change—a necessary transformation for significant psychological change. This shift enabled addicts to overcome the psychological drives that made them drink uncontrollably. Wilson’s insistence on the importance of spirituality in recovery, which had helped him stay sober for more than 20 years, led him to take a significant risk in search of answers for this spiritual transformation. Wilson decided to volunteer in a clinical trial for a new substance that was still under study for use in psychotherapy. Under the supervision of scientist Sydney Cohen at a hospital in Los Angeles, Wilson participated in the trial. This trial tested a new substance on alcoholics who had failed to quit by all other means—nothing else had worked! The substance tested was Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, commonly known as LSD.
