In the beginning there was water everywhere. There was no place for the birds and other creatures either for taking rest or for making nests and laying eggs. So, all birds and creatures prayed to God that He should create for them earth to take rest or to make nests and lay eggs. God heeded their prayer and was ready to create earth provided someone brought mud from the bottom of the water. All the creatures were ready for the task. First, the “Kilkila” bird dived and tried to bring out the mud but while coming out of the water, all got washed away from its beak. Next, the tortoise went down. He put plenty of mud on his back and began to come out of the water but that mud too was washed away from his back. When tortoise failed crab went down. He too caught hold of some mud with his pincers, but that too was washed away while he came out of the water. Finally eathwarm went down. He swallowed the mud stomachfull and came out of the water. All the creatures laughed at him because he came empty handed, but to their surprise he asked God to open his palm. When God opened his palm, the earthwarm vomited out the mud into God’s palm. God was very happy and out of that little mud he created the earth.
