Did you know that the word mathematics comes from the Greek word mathema, meaning what one learns? In ancient Egypt, scribes used a primitive form of math to solve problems related to building the great pyramids. The number zero was introduced to the Western world by Italian mathematician Fibonacci in the 13th century. The Fibonacci sequence, where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc.), is found in many aspects of nature, such as the pattern of a sunflower's seeds. The ancient Greeks were the first to explore the concept of infinity in mathematics. The Golden Ratio (approximately 1.61803398875) can be found in art, architecture, and nature, creating aesthetically pleasing proportions. The famous mathematician Pythagoras created the Pythagorean Theorem, which states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Algebra, a branch of mathematics, comes from the Arabic word al-jabr, which means reunion of broken parts. Mathematics is known as the universal language because it transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, enabling people all over the world to communicate through numbers and formulas.
